$1 Million Capacity-Building Grant for Island Grown Initiative's New Island Food Center

To help meet the growing needs of the Martha's Vineyard community, Island Grown Initiative was awarded a $1 million grant to construct the Island Food Center. The new facility provides the Island Food Pantry with a permanent home and create essential warehouse and office space for local organizations dedicated to advancing food equity.

Of the many nonprofits funded in prior years, larger awards included grants for the following:

  • Martha's Vineyard Little League - a grant to cover the cost of player uniforms and hats, new equipment and supplies, and a limited number of scholarships.
  • Penikese Island School - a grant to provide 4th- 12th graders from Falmouth and Martha's Vineyard access to place based experiential education on a remote, 75-acre uninhabited island.
  • Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group - a grant to support this all-volunteer group's mission to provide emotional and financial support to Island cancer patients and their families.
  • Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center - a grant to fund scholarships for year-round Island students.
  • Neighborhood Falmouth - a grant to support scholarships to this community-based nonprofit membership organization with the mission to help seniors live independently.
  • Falmouth Housing Trust - a grant to support the organization's mission of developing and maintaining sustainable, affordable workforce housing for the benefit of Falmouth residents.
  • Great Pond Foundation - a grant for MV Cyano, a collaborative initiative among the Island Boards of Health and the Great Pond Foundation to monitor cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) on Martha's Vineyard.
